HOPE Youth CORPS and Volunteer Corps in 2016 were in July in two locations: Port Moresby and the Central Highlands. Look out for more service opportunities in 2018-19!

HOPE Youth Corps Port Moresby

The group served in underprivileged communities in Port Moresby, (the capital) and the surrounding region. The participants served at the nine mile clinic, doing maintenance work, being involved in community outreach, visiting an agriculture program in a village outside of the capital and teaching literacy to children. The community outreach included joining a successful HIV prevention program for at risk groups. Participants worked alongside volunteers from the Port Moresby Church of Christ and experienced how people in Papua New Guinea live day to day. A challenging environment, pushing you out of your comfort zone!

HOPE Volunteer Corps Highlands

The group spent the first three days in Port Moresby and and thankfully a pilots strike lifted so the group were able to take a plane ride into the central highlands. They served at a remote clinic in Gumine and Moroma, doing maintenance work, being involved in community outreach, literacy and working with a water project. There was a one-day each way hike to go and visit a remote village (Kalvary) to support a church group and surrounding community. The trip included delivering books to the primary school and setting up a solar system on the church roof. The trip was an adventure- an experience of a lifetime!
