Campus Service Day

Campus distributing sandwiches and spending time with the homeless in Melbourne CBD

As part of an effort to have the Melbourne Campus Ministry engage more in service, we
had a Campus Service Day where we made sandwiches and distributed them to the
homeless in Melbourne’s CBD. Starting with a morning devotional and some sharing,
we then split into teams and (after washing our hands!) made our sandwiches.

We then distributed them throughout the city, taking the time to have conversations with the
people we served along the way, and capped off the day with d-groups in the evening-
discussing how the day impacted us and changed our view of service. The devotional
and sharing, based on seeing how we ourselves can be changed through service
instead of trying to change others, motivated our day and was a focus for everybody. To
see how our attitude towards those in need and serving them often reflects our
discipleship was an upward call for everyone and helped us see how we should
integrate both service and ministry in our discipleship!
For me personally, the day was very impacting not just in terms of the service but to see
the response of the Melbourne Campus Ministry. To work and serve together enabled
us to build greater faith in ourselves and inspire it in others. It was particularly impacting
to see how everyone keenly engaged with the people we served: taking the time to sit
down with them and hear their stories, as well as provide a meal. To be “partners in the
gospel” was definitely very uplifting and stands as a testament to just how powerful a
force we can be when united together. It inspired me to be just as purposeful in my local
ministry, as the campus ministry was during that day.
Starting as a small idea from a few people it was incredible to see it unfold into the
success it was, with the ministry keen to continue engaging in service projects, having
seen just how impactful they can be. Special thanks and congratulations to everyone
involved, it truly was a day filled with many victories and impacted hearts- both in the
people we served and in ourselves.
